The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, a division of Nova Southeastern University, is celebrating its free Third Thursday event at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, with an “informance” – a lecture and musical performance – exploring how American music blossomed during the 20th century. The presentation titled Quintessential or Quirky? – American Vocal Music of the 20th Century, is part of the museum’s current exhibit Coming of Age: American Art 1850s to 1950s, which traces how American artists broke with European tradition and forged a distinct American expression.
Bill J. Adams and Jennifer Donelson, both assistant professors of music at Nova, will discuss the eclectic works of American composers Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland, as well as Broadway music, and explore what it means for music to “sound American.”
In addition to the presentation, the museum will offer free admission after 5 p.m., extended hours (until 8 p.m.), drink specials in the café and wine bar and a docent-led tour of Coming of Age: American Art 1850s to 1950s immediately following the “informance.” That exhibit ends March 23.
Current museum exhibitions include Pablo PICASSO ceramics / Carlos LUNA paintings along with the museum’s permanent collections.
The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale is at 1 East Las Olas Blvd.
