Broward County residents have already received their TRIM (Truth in Millage notices), which include the property appraiser’s estimate of the current value of their property, their assessed value for tax purposes and the tax bill they can expect with the millage rates proposed by the various taxing authorities.
Anyone in Florida who believes the property appraiser has set the taxable value of their property too high has the right to an appeal, but the petition for appeal must be filed by Sept. 18. This Q&A explains the process and provides links to the property appraiser websites and necessary forms in Miami-Dade and Broward.
Here is a story I wrote for The Miami Herald on how to appeal your taxable value. Those who are most likely to benefit from an appeal are people who bought at the height of the market and owners of properties without homestead exemptions.
The Broward property appraiser has lots of information on the website.
The office is also open expanded hours the next few weeks to hear from people who believe their values were set too high. You can call 954-357-6830 or visit the main office at 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 111, Fort Lauderdale, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. The office will be open until 7 p.m. Sept. 8-18. Both the main office and West Broward office, 1 N. University Drive, Room 111-A, Plantation, will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. two more Saturdays: Aug. 29 and Sept. 12.
