gallerySouth Florida artists and their work are featured  at a free event in  Sunrise.

An opening reception for an exhibit, “Messages In Mixed Media,”  is 6:30 p.m. September 6.

The event and the exhibit, which  showcases the work of two featured artists, are at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery. The exhibit is on display to October 12.

Twenty-four local artists are showcasing their paintings in a free display,  titled “Splash.”

The exhibit at Nova Southeastern University in Davie is in the second-floor gallery of the library. 

Along with the exhibit, which runs into September, spectators may want to attend a demonstration focusing on the techniques for  painting ocean waves. The presentation, How to Paint A Wave, is at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10.

If you enjoy tinkering with Legos, you’ll enjoy this exhibit in downtown Hollywood.

Artist Nathan Sawaya uses the plastic toy blocks  to make his impressive sculptures.

His pieces are on display at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison St.,  Hollywood.  Enjoy them free on Sunday, June 20  noon to 4 p.m.

The third Sunday of the month is Free Admission Day at the center,  954-921-3274.

Enjoy free  entertainment to kick off an exhibit  in Davie showcasing art produced by the Florida Highwaymen.  The festivities include music and dance performances. 

The event is Thursday, Feb. 4, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Nova Southeastern University, 3301 College Ave., Davie.  Reservations are required. Phone 954-262-5353.

The exhibit, Road To Empowerment: Art of the Florida Highwaymen, features vintage oil paintings of Florida landscapes by an assortment of  African-American artists who were known as the Highwaymen.

The paintings are on display through April 10 in the Second Floor Gallery at the NSU library.

  • Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Fridays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
