It’s almost the first Tuesday of the month, which means it’s time for the monthly mini model build event.

Starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, stop by the Aventura Lego store (at Aventura Mall) to build a scarecrow.

The best part? It’s free. The freebie is available while supplies last, and the event is open to children ages 6-14 only.

A new Lego store is opening at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise Oct. 28, and Legoland Florida opens in Orlando on Oct. 15.

Youngsters who dine with their parents at some Original Pancake House restaurants in South Florida eat on the house.

Kids eat free with an adult purchase 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m. at most local restaurants in the Original Pancake House group.

It’s probably a good idea to phone first to be sure the restaurant in your neighborhood is participating.

movies Every time I go to the movies, it seems as if the price has gone up again. These days, I can get an entire month of Netflix for less than the price of a movie.

But real movie lovers know that there is nothing like seeing a film on the big screen and sharing the experience with other movie lovers.

Matinees are still cheaper than evening shows, but most matinees in South Florida run $7.50 to $9, a discount of a few dollars. Seniors (usually 62-plus) and students pay less. The major chains have loyalty cards, which offer discounts. Discounts are sometimes available from companies that buy tickets in bulk. Regal Cinemas has a weekly concession coupon on its Facebook page.

We did a little research and found a few places where adults can see movies on the cheap. At some theaters, Imax and 3-D shows incur an additional charge over the discount price.

Here are the best movie deals for adults:

Broward

Miami-Dade

Here are some other ways to get discounts on movie tickets:

  • Weekly Cinema is a subscription service that provides a specified number of tickets for a fixed monthly fee. Currently, it is offering four movie tickets for $19.99 a month. Weekly Cinema also has been offering packages on various deal sites that don’t require signing up for the monthly program.
  • Fandango is an online ordering system that sometimes offers specials. The Weekly Cinema tickets can be redeemed using Fandango.
  • CityDeals usually has discount movie tickets. It’s currently offering 50% off an AMC ticket package, or 33% off a Regal ticket package.

Weekly Cinema, Fandango and City Deals are advertising partners of Miami Fl on the Cheap and Fort Lauderdale on the Cheap.
