For those who are enjoying a day off of work and school, several free events are offered in Broward.

Various municipalities are offering activities and parades for  Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is January 21

Here are some of the events.

  • Fort Lauderdale: parade and performances by high school marching bands; parade and non-violence march  is 10:30 a.m. from Elementary School, 591 NW 31 Avenue to Dillard High School, 2501 NW 11th Street. At the high school, about 11:30 a.m. marching bands perform,  954-828-5435 or 954-828-8945
  • Deerfield Beach: parade through several roads at 10 a.m.  and activities and entertainment during the day at Westside Park, 445 SW Second St.  Free shuttle from Pioneer Park,  954-480-4429
  • Pompano Beach:  parade on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard at 9 am; activities at Blanche Ely High School at 11 a.m.,  954-786-4585
  • Everglades National Parks and other national parks are free on January 21.

Free books & fun at Children’s BookFest

Books1The South Regional Library is presenting a Kids’ BookFest, packed with activities for youngsters and families.

The free event is 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 28.

The first 1,000 youngsters to attend the event receive free books.

Highlights include storytellers, entertainers and a Fantasy Parade.  Kids are encouraged to dress up as fairies, wizards, princesses and other favorite storybook characters and join the parade, which is at 12:15 p.m.

The South Regional/Broward College Library is at 7300 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines.

Free St. Patrick’s Events March 11

Several towns are offering festivities for St. Patrick’s Day, including Hollywood.

The free events in Hollywood include a festival at Hollywood Boulevard and 19th Avenue noon to 6 p.m. and a parade at 1 p.m. March 11. Parking in municipal garages is $10.

Music, food for sale and marching bands are among the highlights, 954-921-3404

The parade route is 21st Ave and Harrison Street north to Hollywood Boulevard, east to Young Circle, south to Harrison and back to 21st Avenue.

The Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival are free.

The events are March 10.

The parade with marching bands and floats  is noon to 1:30 p.m. on Las Olas Bouelvard from Eighth Avenue to Huizenga Plaza, 32 E. Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale

The festival, which includes music, kids activites and food and beverages for sale,  is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Huizenga Plaza.

Free Parade & Fun at Regional Park

Kids activities and entertainment are featured at this event, which is free with paid entry to the park.

Many bands are participating in the festivities Sunday October 2

The event showcases Caribbean culture and features  a parade of  kids  showing off bright festive costumes. 

The parade is at 1 p.m. and the  carnival is noon to 8 p.m. Sunday October 2 at Central  Broward Regional Park,  3700 NW 11th Place, Lauderdale, 954-357-5400

The carnival is free. Entry to the park is $6.50 for adults and kids age 6 and older.

 St. Patrick’s Day festivities include parades and festivals in Broward.

  •  Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, which features jugglers, parachuters, and irish fare, is Saturday, March 12, 11:30  a.m. to 9 p.m at Huizenga Plaza at Andrews Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  The parade marches about noon along Las Olas Boulevard from Southwest Eighth Avenue, west to Huizenga Plaza. 954-828-5985

 

  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in downtown Hollywood, Sunday, March 13, noon to 7 p.m.  Musical performances are on stage  on Hollywood Boulevard at  19th Avenue.  The lucky roll dice game, story telling and art projects are among family activities at Anniversary Park on Hollywood Boulevard and 20th Avenue. Various venues in Broward are offering free holiday-theme attractions and events.

North Broward

  • Pompano Beach — Yuletide On Atlantic Holiday Parade and Event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 9 on East  Atlantic Boulevard, east of the Intracoastal Waterway, Pompano Beach. The parade moves west  on Altantic Boulevard to McNab Park, 2250 E. Atlantic Blvd. At the park, the kids activities, photos with Santa and food are featured. Those who donate  canned food or used eyeglass are eligible to win a bicycle. If it rains, the event is rescheduled for Dec. 10.  954-786-4111.
  • The Coconut Creek High School Chorus and Band performs at Cococnut Creek City Hall, 4800 W. Copans Road, Thursday Dec. 16 9 a.m. to noon.

East Broward

  • Hallandale Beach — Holiday Celebration Friday, Dec. 10, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Village of Gulfstream Park, 501 S. Federal Highway. The event includes kids activities, entertainment, Santa, balloon artists, face painting and music. Food vendors are selling snacks and a fee is set for amusement rides. 954-457-1452.

Enjoy a parade, story time and half-price admission as part of the festivities for the Halloween event at a wildlife sanctuary in Davie.

The multi-faceted event is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at  Flamingo Gardens, 3750 S. Flamingo Road, Davie. The half-price admission is  $4.25 for kids ages 4 to 11, $8.50 for guests ages 12 and older, and free for kids 3 and younger.

The costume parade is at 11 a.m. and story time is at 12.

Free Activities At Clambake Festival

It’s hopping this weekend on Hollywood Beach.
Live music. Parades. Food.

The annual Clambake, a music and seafood festival, is on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, east of A1A off Johnson Street.

The event, which features an assortment of free family entertainment, is Friday to Sunday Oct. 16 to 18. Browse the line-up of activities, on this website.

Paid parking is available at the Johnson Street municipal garage and surface lots, at the Oceanwalk Mall next to the Ramada Inn Hollywood Beach Resort at Hollywood Boulevard and A1A, and at the Garfield Street Parking Garage at Connecticut Street and A1A.

Other festival highlights include a Classic Car show, a a Brazilian Samba Parade, Bahamian Junkanoo Parade, the Best Chowder Contest and a Clam Chowder Crawl along Hollywood Beach’s Restaurant Row.

Free St. Patrick’s fest in Hollywood

hollystpatDowntown Hollywood’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival will feature Irish folk and rock bands, step dancing, Irish coffee, food and beer from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 15, along Hollywood Boulevard west of Young Circle, between 18th and 19th avenues. The event is free to the public.

Festivities will include parade starting at 1 p.m. featuring the New York Police Department’s famous Emerald Society Pipes & Drums, floats, local pipe bands, marching bands and community groups.

Performers will be Walt Rooney, 12:30 p.m.; Joe Dougherty, 1:30 p.m.;  Celtic Bridge, 2:15 p.m.; Off the Track,  3:15 p.m., Norman Clifford, 4 p.m. and Echoes of Erin, 4:30 p.m.

The parade and festival are pesented by the Hibernians of Hollywood, in coordination with the City of Hollywood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency-Downtown District.

* Sistrunk Historical Festival and parade in Fort Lauderdale. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and travels down Sistrunk Boulevard, where it ends with a big street festival at Reverend Samuel Delevoe Park with arts & crafts, food and entertainment. Entertainment includes recording artist Bobby Valentino and Brisco.

* Coconut Creek Butterfly Festival. 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sabal Pines Park, 5005 NW 39 Ave. Free entertainment, including a concert by Almost ABBA, kiddie rides, carnival games, business expo, clowns, face painting and LaserNet Laser Show.

John Anderson gives a free concert in Davie at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, March 1.

This weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) is the Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo in Davie, a 72-year-old tradition, which makes it one of the oldest traditions in South Florida.

Festivities start at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, with a $4 Kiwanis pancake breakfast at the Moose Lodge. The Strawberry Festival begins at 8 a.m., and the parade starts at 10. Music, pioneer re-enactments, arts and crafts, Old West shoot-outs, kids’ play area and other activities are free all day Saturday and Sunday.

At 3:45 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds, country singer John Anderson will give a free concert.

The rodeo itself, which has an admission charge, is at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
