Loud, booming Fourth of July festivities are fun for people.
Not so much for animals, including our furry best friends.
The Humane Society of the United States and other animal advocacy organizations issue Independence Day tips for happy and safe pets.
- Keep pets indoors, away from fireworks, loud noises and flashing lights. Leave a TV or radio on. Read additional tips for pets fearful of thunder and other loud noises on the Humane Society of the United States website
- Be sure pets are wearing ID tags. Even when they are indoors, some fearful pets break through windows and door screens during fireworks.
- Protect pets from excessive exposure to sun and heat, especially in parked vehicles. Provide fresh water at all times.
- Broward animal officials recommend keeping pets safely away from hot BBQ grills, charcoal, lighter fluid, sunscreen and insect repellent. If a pet ingests a poisonous substance, phone your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center, 888-426-4435
