kids-eatDinner out with the family can get expensive. One way to cut the cost is to find restaurants where kids eat free. We’ve compiled our own list of Kids Eat Free Deals in Broward, which also includes some “kids eat cheap” deals.

Several websites collect such deals, though no list is perfect. Some stick to the major chains only. Others have the contact info but no details of the deal. If you’re looking for a “kids eat free” deal, here are a few national sites to check:

  • CouponDivas Kids Eat Free: National chains, organized by day-of-the week. You’ll find deal details, but it’s wise to call ahead, as not every location participates in the promotions.
  • KidsMealDeals.com: Site lets you search for kids eat free deals by zip code. I did a quick search of my area, and several of the deals I clicked on included the line, “the specifics of this deal are not yet available online.” The phone number is right there, which makes it easy to call ahead. On the plus side, it also includes deals for several local favorites.

Enjoy! If you know about a great kids’ meal deal in Broward, please post a comment!

pictureWouldn’t it be great if there were an easy way to give your unwanted but perfectly good stuff to someone who needed it? And a way to get stuff that’s perfect for you but doesn’t work for your neighbors any more?

There is, and it’s called Freecycle. It’s a great way to work with your neighbors to save money and save the environment by recycling within the community.

South Florida has multiple Freecycle groups, including many in Broward County. To participate, go to www.freecycle.org and pick the group you want to join. Once your membership has been approved, you’ll receive an e-mail with instructions. Read through the rules and then offer items you’d like to give away and watch the postings for items you’d like to receive.

When using Freecycle, I’ve found it’s easier to give than to receive. You have to move fast when someone posts a desirable item, and you have to be able to pick it up quickly. But I have found Freecycle an excellent way to find new owners for furniture, cleaning products, nonperishable food and other items I wanted to shed when I moved to another house. In return, I’ve received a colorful Brazilian painting, the best lamp in my house and a full set of Crate & Barrel dishes.

couponsThe show “Extreme Couponing” has brought new attention to the money you can save on groceries by judicious use of coupons. While we don’t advocate that you stockpile a 30-year supply of toilet paper in your garage, we do recommend looking for coupons before you head to the grocery store.

If you’re looking for coupons, check out our new coupon page, which is constantly updated with new coupons. It’s a geolocating page, which means that if you look at in Fort Lauderdale, you’ll see special offers for Fort Lauderdale.

You can search, sort and quickly find just the coupons you want to print out. Remember that if an item is buy one, get one free at Publix, you can use two coupons.

We also have a section below the coupons with other offers, including offers for free samples.

We also have a page of online promo codes for shopping.

For tips on how to strategically use coupons, check out the Coupon Insider tips at Living on the Cheap.

We’re always trying to find a way to dine out on the cheap. One option is Local Dines South Florida  (formerly South Florida Dines), which sells discount dining certificates to more than 350 restaurants in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County.

The usual discount is 50% off. Occasional Blue Plate Specials take the cost even lower.

Each restaurant sells a limited number of certificates each month, and there is a limit on how many any one patron can by. Check out the current offerings here. Click on Blue Plate Specials on the orange menu bar for the deepest discounts.

One of the most fun things to do is listen to live music. But it’s not always easy to find out where the bands you want to hear are playing.

Weekend Broward is a website that will help you find live music events, most with no cover charge. The site covers music in Broward, Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Weekend Broward has a calendar of live music, a list of the best Fort Lauderdale bars for bands, karaoke nights and also listings for comedy and open mike nights.

If you’re hungry, its sister site, Food Trucks Fort Lauderdale, tells you where the food trucks are in Broward on any given day.

barnes-and-noble-summer-readingThis summer, kids can get a free book at Barnes & Noble with the Imagination’s Destination summer reading program. If kids in grades 1-6 read eight books and fill out a reading journal, they’ll get to choose a free kid’s book.

The bookstore program isn’t the only one in which kids can earn prizes for summer reading. Our friends at Living on the Cheap have a list of 10 other free summer reading programs, plus a few additional resources.

Graduation-hatsEven though I don’t have children, I think my age qualifies me to give some money advice to new graduates. Yes, I think they should save money and stay out of debt, but I also think they should learn to cook. You can find the rest of my advice at Living on the Cheap. Leave a comment with the best advice you have for new grads – and their parents who are seeing them move back home.
